Default What is your total investment loss from being banned?

As I recall we had a number of posts in the past of some users being banned either for account fraud, accidental termination, etc etc. What makes me wonder about all of this is most players who have this game have something invested in it, be it several campaigns, bonus packs, unlocks, ingame items... I'm curious as to what is it some of these players have invested and had to lose due to their account being terminated?

I'm always up for the other side of the story....

I haven't been banned because I don't break the terms of the EULA.

Your move.

The only thing i can imagine being really really tragic in any sort of ban or account closure is time lost. All other things can be recovered over time. But the amount of time invested in these RPG MMORPG whatever you like to call them is MASSIVE!!!!

I did a little informal poll query some time ago and 83% of those that responded said if they lost it all, they would NOT do it again. Its just too much of a grind. Again time lost is the one thing you are not able to recover.

YOU LIE! Either that, or you're just a conformist. Your move.

On-Topic: I've been banned alot for verbal abuse and spamming [which I think is automated because there's no way in HELL that Anet's staff is going to look into the chat logs to look at the details in the matter... so they use programs to detect bad words and excess text in certain chat boxes to support "/report-(ab)users" in their quest to ban and exhaust player's patience and willingness to play anymore]. No perma-bans yet though, luckily. That's why I now intentionally misspell curse words and type in different words in each line every time I type in excess.

I've never seen someone banned for cursing (unless its like a 50 post spam)

people that get banned for verbal abuse are generally banned for constant harrassment of another player
i.e. "you suck" "I did your mom" "gay gay gay" spammed repeatedly to same player and/or asking a player for personal info

Your implying it's necessary to break the eula to play this game?

its because people are reporting you. when you've been reported above a certain threshold they look into it.

Alternatively, you could try not to be a douche in all chat. Just a thought.

By the way, intentionally misspelling curse words is avoiding the chat filter, which is also ban-worthy. If you curse in allchat, just use the real words; as long as you're not cursing at someone, you shouldn't be banned for it. To you, though, this advice may be pointless.

[edit]Oh yeah, the topic:

Buying a game is not an "investment". You're paying for enjoyment, you receive said enjoyment, and (provided you're not banned within a week of making your account) you've probably received your money's worth of enjoyment. Therefore, anyone getting banned hasn't lost any "investment", at least not in terms of money. Time, yes.

I suppose this dips into the physical media vs license argument. Lots of corporate "trick-talking" comes into play from that one.

I gotta agree with this. I didn't buy this game as an investment. I bought it to enjoy and have fun in my free time. "Investment" implies that I hope to make some money off it. I suppose for Ultra-ultra-ultra high end PvP'ers that is possible (without breaking the EULA) but I'm just here to relax.

I've been playing for 3+ years now and I've certainly gotten my money's worth out of the game.

What I've gained from those idiots/scammers/botters/dupers/and griefers being banned outweighs anything they have lost.

Edit: Not at all surprised Regulus gets banned a lot.

If you curse doing a match in all chat while you are in the arena you have a high chance of being banned. If you curse in town someone must report you.

Hate to tell you, but Guild Wars is a purchase, not an investment.

Every purchase is an investment. Some purchases yield no return and therefore become a poor investment in terms of profit/use of capital, without the intent to sell. This in turn relates to the value of said purchase over time. I could go on.

The word can be loosely used and being a grammar Nazi about it is quite sad. Much like how you interpretting "investing" hours into playing Guild Wars. No monetary return, however enjoyment, titles and socialising (to an extent) are types of return.

On Topic: I was accidentally perma-banned 2 years ago because someone had reported me for verbal abuse (completely false and admitted by the reporter), but i had just after jokingly pretended to sell my armour pieces for runescape gold. the report included that, and after serving my 3 day ban, i found myself perma-banned.

I quickly got onto support, pleaded my case, they basically said "our bad". and i was serving another 3 day ban.

I was about to lose 2500+ hours, all campaigns, collectors Factions and Nightfall, BMP, char slots and my will to carry on with the game, with no way of getting it all back. But of course, the money doesn't matter, Guild Wars was always mega cheap, but with about 4000 hours of game time presently it would be a headache or 7 to lose it all for nothing.

Anet won't ban you for using swear words, they provide a chat filter for that. If people don't like seeing them they can simply turn that on. Intentionally subverting the chat filter can get ya banned if anyone takes the time to report you.

That said, using swear words even correctly, to harass someone will still net a ban. Just don't single people out and spell correctly and your fine. At least I've never been banned and I use profanity quite often when I type in chat.

Actually Phaern, I'm pretty sure just about everyone who reports for swears takes it off intentionally looking forward to reporting for swears. Because as Skyy said, people who play this game are douches.

No... I don't mind the occasional swear or outburst, and generally, neither does a.net.

It's the pro-Nazi, 30 minute long racist triad that gets you banned.
